Jesus said in Matthew 5:17, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”  The thing Jesus said don’t think is the very thing that many Christians are thinking and that is that Jesus abolished the law. Just what did Jesus mean when He said, I came to fulfill the law?  Does this mean there is no moral obligation to the 10 commandments?

(Matthew 5:17)  Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Thayer Definition:

2c3) to fulfil, i.e. to cause God’s will (as made known in the law) to be obeyed as it should be, and God’s promises (given through the prophets) to receive fulfilment

(Matthew 5:21)  Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

(Matthew 5:22)  But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

(Matthew 5:27)  Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

(Matthew 5:28)  But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

(John 14:23)  Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

(1 Corinthians 3:16)  Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

(1 Corinthians 3:17)  If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

(Matthew 5:17)  Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

(Matthew 5:18)  For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

(Matthew 5:18 RV)  For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished.

(Hebrews 10:16 KJV)  This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

(Revelation 22:12 KJV)  And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

(Ephesians 2:10 KJV)  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

(Revelation 22:13 KJV)  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

(Revelation 22:14 KJV)  Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
